Lucy Russell, violin
Sezi Seski, fortepiano
Andrew Justice, Society for Eighteenth-Century Music: ‘Russell… manages to embody both a structural late-Baroque clarity of sound and (as the sonatas “age” over the course of the disc) glimpses of the nineteenth-century virtuoso… it is refreshing to hear musicians find enlightening and successful ways of celebrating and elevating our appreciation of the standard canon.’
Terry Robbins, theWholeNote: ‘The performances are absolutely top-drawer, simply bursting with life and with excellent ensemble work, great dynamics and virtuosity galore.’
Huntley Dent, Fanfare: ‘This is a lovely disc…these new performances rise confidently on their own merits.’
Leader
The Fitzwilliam String Quartet
Lucy Russell has been leader of the world-renowned Fitzwilliam String Quartet for 30 years.
Founded in 1968, the group achieved international recognition as a result of its members’ personal friendship with Dmitri Shostakovich. The composer entrusted them with the Western premières of the last three of his quartets, and before long they had become the first ever group to perform and record all fifteen. Gramophone described the recordings as amongst the '100 Greatest Recordings' of all time.
